November 5, 2003 (cont'd): After waiting a couple of stagnant days, we got to see Scott and Carl come today to break up and haul away the old driveway! It was well built and was very difficult for them to bust up but they got it all taken care of in ONE DAY! Kriss and I jumped in to help for a couple hours breaking up pieces with the sledge hammer and tossing them into the 5-yard dump truck (I think 5). It took 3 whole loads, but it's done now!
November 7, 2003: Today I was leaving for work when a dump-truck full of gravel came. John Palmer said he'd be having some gravel put in today and finish leveling the site. Jay-The-Trackhoe-Guy came and started leveling at about 7:30am. About 9:00 or so a dump truck with gravel showed up (driver unknown to me) and dumped crushed rock for the base of the concrete. They must have done some stuff today because when I got home the site was more level (maybe even completely level) and there was a compacted layer of rock over it and filling the trenches. The trench adjacent to the house was there, but there was still no interior bearing wall trench across the middle of the addition spot (see foundation plan).
November 14, 2003: A little retro catch-up….After the 7th I did get to come home to find the site all dug and leveled and the trenches were full of compacted gravel just like Palmer said. I was happy. Over the last couple days we have had….let's see….hmmmm….where to begin? ...I got to deal with a couple of inspections on Thursday! First of all, I called for an inspection for the concrete forms. Scott and Carl weren't done yet, but they said they would be. I called in the request for the inspection when I realized that we were going to need an inspection of the PLUMBING before we bury it in the concrete. The problem with that was that I had forgotten to even get a PERMIT for that plumbing yet! I raced down on Wednesday morning on the way to work and got to the city and asked them what I should do. Kim at the desk was helpful and allowed me to fill out the appropriate forms for the permit and hand it in on the spot (as long as I put up the $124.00). I got the permit and set up an inspection for Thursday at the same time as the inspection for the forms (1;30pm). I was pretty relieved. I was additionally relieved when I met the inspectors for both the building and the plumbing. Shellie (I think) is the plumbing inspector and was really nice and helpful with suggestions for the project. Richard (I think) was the name of the building inspector. He was also very friendly. I hope to see them both again. Thursday the forms were all completed and ready to rock when
the inspector came to see. We were able to then think about the rest of the job of preparing for the concrete to show up on Friday morning at 9:30. The only problem was that there was a little water leak at the valve outside the concrete area. I called up the plumber and had him…...
